Questions & Answers:
Q: What is Building Information Modeling?
A: The term "BIM" is the process of creating and using digital models for design, construction, and facility management.
Q: Who is using BIM?
A: The most early adopters were the architectural firms, but more recently it is being used by the entire project team. The most typical users are architects, engineers, contractors, owners, and facility managers.
Q: How much would it cost to implement BIM in a small office (3-4 users)?
A: Hardware: $7,000-$12,000
Software (BIM+Collabroation+Estimating): $24,000-$35,000
Training: $4,000-$10,000
Staff: $110,000-$170,000
The exact total can vary upon region, but the figures above should give you a good indication. An alternative would be our on-site staffing service and you could avoid the up-front costs and training.
Q: Is BIM difficult to learn?
A: It is highly recommended to receive professional training if you want to be truely proficient. There are major differences between traditional CAD software and BIM software. To get the most from your software requires you to change the way that design and construction has existed for decades.
Q: What agencies are currently requiring BIM?
A: GSA
Army Corp of Engineers
U.S. Air Force
U.S. Coast Guard
Q: What is the most commonly used BIM software?
A: Revit Architecture
Revit MEP
Revit Structure
Autodesk Navisworks (collaboration)
Bentley Architecture
Bentley Mechanical Systems
Bentley Electrical Systems
Bentley Structure
Projectwise Navigator (collaboration)
ArchiCAD
Q: What is clash detection?
A: The process of identifying, inspecting, and reporting of interferences within the 3D model. In the event 2 objects occupy the same space it is reported as a clash. The software only identifies the clash and issues a report to be used by the project team. To resolve the clash you will need to return to the original program that created the BIM model.
